..........SO WHERE IS DITHMARSCHEN ?
Where is Dithmarschen?

Dithmarschen is situated on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein in North West Germany. It covers an area of 1,425sq.Km with a population of 130,000 surrounded by the North Sea, River Eider, River Elbe and Kiel Canal.

The administrative centre is HEIDE. Hamburg, with its international airport is within an hours travelling distance, a main rail link from Hamburg to Westerland, regional airports in St. Michaelisdonn and Büsum, the Kiel Canal and River Elbe all make Dithmarschen an important bridgehead for trade to Scandinavia and the Baltic states.

Brunsbüttel is world famous as a port handling 7 million tons of cargo every year. Manufacturing firms, large and small range from highly specialised service industries, electrical components and mechanical engineering firms through to building contractors and wood working companies. One of the traditional industries is that of food processing – local meat, vegetables and fish as well as foreign produce are used. High quality chocolates are exported all over the world.

Dithmarschen provides culture in many forms. Heide is the centre for the ‘Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival’. Meldorf, the old capital of the region has one of the most important museums and there are many culturally notable churches in the area. Meldorf Cathedral is a good starting point for a tour. Art galleries are to be found all over the area, many situated in old windmills and farmhouses. Dithmarschen, like Restormel, is a holiday region, so there are a wide variety of leisure activities to pursue. For sailing there are six harbours on the North Sea, for Windsurfers there is a large inland lake. On land, there is golf, football, riding facilities, rifle shooting and indoor and outdoor tennis courts. In fact, most sports can be found including gliding, sea and fresh water Angling.

One half of Dithmarschen has been reclaimed from the sea. Since the 16th Century, dykes have been systematically built, creating fertile farmland (the ‘Marsch’). The ‘Wattenmeer’, a unique environment protected by the ‘Naturpark Schleswig-Holstein’ has become a meeting point for countless sea birds. In contrast, there is the hilly, wooded ‘Geest’ area and to enable one to appreciate the contrasting countryside Dithmarschen boasts 1,500 km of cycle tracks.
