ST LEVAN SPORTS WEEK 2007:
Well, we managed to defy the weather at every event and had a brilliant week.
• The final Auction amount was £1806: thank you all so much.
• Sports Day, apart from a few damp patches, was good enough to bring out the regulars: although we had to drop a few events for safety reasons we had a really good day. Lindy and her team as usual had the unenviable job of keeping track of the winners and points, and as usual, it ran like clockwork (except for one race, which Terri messed up: better stick to being a gofer!) As Lord St Levan couldn't be with us (for the first time in over 70 years) Mrs Pat Snow, a stalwart member of our committee, presented the prizes for the fancy dress. The numbers were down, only to be expected in the rain: however the entries were still inventive and some of them must have been freezing. The Penberth Georges pulled out all the stops again and the sight of Penny rushing off to work still looking like Grotbags will stay in our memory for a long time! The evening was completed by a visit from ex Prime Minister Tony Blair (aka John Brolly) to present prizes and there were some people who were completely fooled: thank you so much, John.
• Rounders as usual was well attended, and run with precision by Chris Wood, who is the only man on the committee who doesn't need a microphone and can keep several games going at the same time!
• The Road Race on Friday, another major fundraiser, organised by Steve Chapple, was a wonderful sight for St Levan: well over 200 competitors in the 10k and two mile races. All statistics on the St Levan Road Race Website. Now a _ well respected race on the runners' calendar.
• The large inflatable games on Saturday were so waterlogged by three o'clock that the people that did brave the weather were soaked in seconds - never mind, they still enjoyed it.
• The biggest gamble of the week, a change from The Barn Dance, was Party in the Park. Sports club chairman Chris and sidekick Jim spent two days putting up a covered stage, with very welcome help from Ian and Pete in the hope the weather would improve, but it didn't. Determined that it would be a success they went ahead with three local bands: For The Day, iPony and Soul Survivor. It was a huge success and the weather didn't make any difference, if it's good enough for Glastonbury ... all ages came and danced 'til midnight, it was so good to see old friends from Sennen and St Buryan and lots of visitors and to have local boys providing the music, (thanks Sarah for the glowsticks). Looks like this will be a regular event on our programme now, so Jean, get practising those bongos for next year.
• Raffle Winners were Daisy Boynes £100, Mick Wilby £50, Ted Colman £25, other winners were Fritz, Robert ?, Dave Beaumont, ? Balbary, Jeanette Thomas, Bobbi Thomas, R Brown, Woody, Martin Jackson, Julian, and ? Bibbings. If I haven't contacted you, could you ring me on 871 954 for email tjs@stlevan.co.uk Thanks for supporting us.
Lastly thanks to those few with any energy left who turned out on Sunday to clean up and pack away: the worst job of the week.
We are hoping to have an evening out for all committee and helpers, so watch this space for news.
2006 SPORTS WEEK
The 2006 St. Levan Sports week was a great success. Many thanks to everyone who helped make the 2006 sports one of the best on record. The weather held fair for sports day and record numbers entered the races. We even had to hold heats for the 100 metres!
Many thanks to Lord St Levan for attending and judging the fancy Dress ably assisted by two "press-ganged" holiday makers. Thanks also to Sir John and Lady Banham for presenting all the prizes.
The rounders night on Thursday also proved extremely popular with an estimated fifty participants.
The road race on Friday night continues to be successful and I am sure Lyn will, in years to come, recall the year she won the 1st Parish Lady trophy! With Steve not running this year it would have been a fine opportunity to put the 1st parish male trophy on the dresser, but hindsight is a wonderful thing!More results and news on this can be found on the links page.
Saturday afternoon hosted the climbing tower and archery on the field. Again this proved successful.
The weather held for Saturday night and the Barn Dance was held on the field.A good time was had by all!
Plans are now already in place for 2007 Sports Week.
